Animals on the farm take an especially important position in biodynamic farming (see Basics). However, this topic attracted only little scientific interest so far. Compared to the large number of research projects on soils and plants, to date there are much less projects on animals.

As in other fields of research (e.g. biodynamic preparations, food quality), the projects on animals are as well influenced by specifically biodynamic or anthroposophic approaches. The awareness of a species' characteristic nature is the background for breeding, feeding and livestock management. The nature appropriate contact with animals also covers a special human-animal-relationship which includes the mental level.

Moreover, there are several research projects which are not especially focused on biodynamic livestock management and which thus form a smooth transition to organic farming in general.
